'A Blossom Fell', written by Margery Harkness Casares, is full of treachery, deceit, romance, and battles.  The setting is in biblical times and makes reference to the Great Flood.  It borrows heavily from the Bible and brought a smile to my face by correctly stating that a rainbow is God's promise that He will never again flood the earth.

Another aspect of the novel being in Biblical time is the way people would worship the gods.  Not to mention the rituals they would practice to appease the gods they somehow had inadvertently angered.  They also believed that floods and other acts of nature were the gods lashing out in anger.  Still
today there are people who believe this nonsense.

Throughout the novel are references to how complicated it can be to assume the crown.  Lineage can be neigh impossibly difficult to follow and the treachery to which people will stoop is astounding.  This includes mothers murdering their own children, Queens substituting concubines to be impregnated while telling the King that the child is her own, and Queens plotting to knock off the King.

This story is about two childhood sweethearts that are wrenched away from each other by a Queen plotting against her King as well as her own son, the Prince. Margery Harkness Casares is a wonderfully descriptive narrator and at times I felt that I needed to go and wash the dust from my feet.  The realism of the backdrop was wonderfully inviting.  The adjectives Margery using to describe the lushness of the palace just makes you want to find out where this paradise is and live the rest of your life there.

There are many characters in the book that are brought to vivid life by the author.  Too many to list here, but I will tell you that I found myself wondering what was going to happen to the betrothed brides a couple of times a day when I had to put the book down.  The tale follows a twisting path that is littered with bloodshed and angst.  Tears and repentance follow shortly behind.  And then they all ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after -- Amen
